Take a moment to listen to all the chatter going on in your head. Mine is saying, “I need to call my sister”, “check in and make sure my son is on track”, “get that youth group plan together”, “organize the service for Sunday”, “what am I going to cook for our friends coming this weekend”, “did my Dad pick up his prescription and how is he doing today”, “don’t forget to medicate the dog for the vet visit tomorrow…or that will be a real nightmare”, and “what about dinner tonight for the family”, “I just need some peace!” Yikes! It goes on and on, doesn’t it?
What if I said that this is not to be our natural state? Yet this background commentary is commonplace and pulls us away from the present moment, creating worry, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and fear of missing out. Is there a way out? A conventional medicine frontline approach is likely medication and maybe some therapy. Is there an alternative? A more natural way to get off this “not so” merry-go-round?
We all need an adjustment to our “thought barometer” from time to time. Implementing mindfulness as a lifestyle strategy will help you to slow down and question the validity of each thought. Mindfulness allows you to be in the present moment, recognizing that the past is the past and the future will take care of itself.
There have been innumerable studies of the beneficial impacts of mindfulness with a correlation to both positive health outcomes and health behaviors. Mindfulness has the ability to positively affect your overall well-being: Mentally - entering a relaxed state of clarity and peace Physically - you can improve your health behaviors Emotionally - you begin to self-regulate and experience less dramatic shifts in your emotional state. Spritually - you create a deeper connection with yourself, others, the world around you, and God.
My coaching mentors, Peter Giza and Heather Lapides put it this way, “In the stillness of mindfulness, your innate wisdom, mental wellbeing and resilience can rise to the surface.” The process results in clarity which empowers us to co-create an action plan to help you live much more in alignment with who you truly are with increased peace, contentment, happiness, and fulfillment.
As I write this, it’s an early Fall day, my door is open to the porch and a gentle rain is falling…mindfulness is calling. So...let the beautiful moments in your life come from simply being aware through creating a personalized mindfulness practice.
